“I can’t wait for my Cex tape to arrive!” My frequent outbursts over the last month or so have drawn puzzled looks and raised eyebrows from loved ones concerned about my moral decline. The subsequent explanation that I was, of course, referring to the latest offering from Mr Rjyan Kidwell does little to alter the look.
Cex is a bit of a cult hero in the independent electro-hip hop field; doggedly committed to DIY ethics that are backed up by bags of talent. I’ve had Cex on the brain since first hearing Tall, Dark and Handcuffed. I rate the time I saw him live (wearing a red Lycra skirt from Camden market “because his clothes had been stolen”) right up there in my “Best gigs ever” list. Thus you begin to see why the release of TRUST YR TECHNO/LUST has resulted in squeals and obsessive babble until the fateful morning it dropped through my letterbox. (Take that water bill reminder!)
Trust is a development of Cex’s sound and principles– here asserting that “even at their most critical, your contemporaries’ standards apparently don’t even begin to approach the harsh expectations you have of yourself”. I took the most coveted tape I’d possessed since winning Country House at a school disco and ran a bath. What ensued was the most aurally challenging wash I’ve had since the ill-fated Merzbow morning showers. Sounds of females in seemingly orgasmic delight, the sounds of pain, the sounds of triumph interspersed with looping, grinding beats that press and persist and niggle their way into your brain; loitering unbidden but not unwelcome. Producer, Eustace B. Federlion, a pioneer in the Baltimore “freedom club” movement, is unrelenting and merciless in his task, layering thick and fast until the tape feels like cosmic dark matter.
Trust is strictly limited edition but I insist that unless you have particularly prudish tendencies go here. Otherwise restrict your bathtime listening to Classic FM at the Movies and wallow in your secret shame.
